Members of American Legion Post #288 fire the 21-gun salute during Monday's Memorial Day service in Hartley.

A wet and windy Memorial Day didn't halt services in Hartley – it just necessitated a change of plans.

American Legion Post #288 moved Monday's program inside to the Hartley Community Center due to less-than-ideal conditions outside. There, Aaron Van Beek, volunteer president and director of Midwest Honor Flight, gave the keynote address urging attendees to remember the supreme sacrifice give by America's bravest so we can be free today.

Six new flags were dedicated to the Avenue of Flags during the service: Lee Currier, Alvin Petersen, Harold Hoftyzer, Glenn Stoterau, Larry Wills and Wayne Westphalen.
