Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn assistant girls' track coach Jim Thomas was among those recognized during a special presentation at the 2022 state track and field meet on May 21. He received a plaque which reads: "Iowa Association of Track Coaches, 25-year Service Award, Jim Thomas, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School. In recognition of 25 years of dedicated service to the track athletes of Iowa."

Thomas came to H-M-S in 1993. He has served as boys' head track coach and assistant boys' and girls' track coach at various times, in addition to being the high school athletic director and coaching other high school and middle school sports.
