The sale of poppies under the auspices of the Hartley American Legion Auxiliary set a new high when a total of $255.25 was collected. The previous high was in 1946 when $250 was received.

Donations to the cancer drive in Hartley fell a little short of the $350 quota. The amount of donations from organizations and individuals totaled $300. Response was considered generally good.

A white Memorial Day was a possibility as snow began falling the day before. By noon on May 29, more than an inch lay on the ground and the flakes were still coming down in true Christmas style.
