National Poppy Day is Friday

The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.

Local residents are encouraged to wear or purchase a poppy to honor those who have worn our nation’s uniform on National Poppy Day, Friday, May 27. All donations received will be used by the American Legion Auxiliary for programs that support veterans, the military community and their families.

On Friday, May 27, Hartley American Legion Auxiliary Unit 288 will have poppies available in many businesses throughout the community. Auxiliary members ask that you join them in remembering those who served and those currently serving to protect our freedom.

Red’s Catering in downtown Hartley will be serving a roast pork dinner and grilled sandwiches on Wednesday, June 1 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Daycare fundraising event planned

The Hartley Community Daycare Center has announced its 3rd Annual Love for the Daycare Fundraiser. The event will be held on Saturday, June 18 at the Hartley Community Center.

Register now for VBS in Hartley

Families with children ages 4 through sixth grade should register them for Vacation Bible School. VBS will be held Sunday-Thursday, June 5-9, from 6-8:30 p.m. at Grace Fellowship Church in Hartley. Volunteers are also needed.

Trivia night in Everly

The Hap Ketelsen Community Center in Everly will be hosting a themed trivia contest on Friday, June 3. Prizes will be awarded to the winning table, and door prizes will also be handed out throughout the evening.

Grassley to hold town hall in Primghar

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will hold town meetings next Tuesday, May 31 in O’Brien County as part of his annual 99 county meetings. The meeting will be held at the Primghar Community Building, 215 1st St. SE, from 12:15-1:15 p.m.

This is Grassley’s 42nd year of holding meetings in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties. Grassley has held at least one meeting in every county, every year since he was first elected to serve in the U.S. Senate. He takes and answers questions on any subject raised from those in attendance

Book Club to discuss new epic by Kristin Hannah

Between the Covers Book Club will be discussing “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah this month. They will meet in the front room of the Hartley Public Library on Tuesday, May 31 at 5 p.m.

Movie night at First Reformed Church in Melvin

The next movie night at First Reformed Church in Melvin will take place Sunday evening, May 29, at 7 p.m. At that time the movie “Different Drummers” will be shown.

The movie is based on an inspiring true story of two boys growing up in the 1960s. David is growing weaker with muscular dystrophy and is confined to a wheelchair when he befriends Lyle. They both become convinced that with faith and willpower, Lyle can teach David to run. As one tries to give the other his extra energy they learn life’s great, yet sometimes painful lessons.

Refreshments will be served during a brief intermission.

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

HLC food pantry

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Al Anon meetings

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.
