A sixth-place finish at the Class 1A boys' sectional golf tournament brought an end to the season for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

Playing at Primghar Golf and Country Club on May 11, the Hawks recorded a final score of 408. Individual 18-hole scores were Jack Mastbergen (52-46, 98), 15th overall; Spencer McCarter (53-47, 100), 18th; Nick Bronstad (50-55, 105), 24th; Wyatt Borden (50-55, 105), 25th; Lucas Kroese (57-49, 106), 28th; and Keith DeBoer (56-56, 112), 35th.

"We didn't finish anywhere near where we wanted to, but we had some kids battle back and play much better," said Hawk coach Mark Japenga. "I was pleased with how the kids represented themselves."

Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire won the sectional title (345) and George Little-Rock finished second (367). They qualified to play in the 1A district tournament on May 16.

South O'Brien was the third-place team (374), Harris-Lake Park and Trinity Christian were tied for fourth (401) and West Bend-Mallard was seventh (429).

Japenga said the season was difficult at times due to weather conditions, but that was a learning opportunity for the team.

"We have to get better at playing through that stuff," he noted. "Overall I saw a lot of improvement. The effort was there and the kids worked hard."

He is also pleased with the leadership of Borden, Bronstad and DeBoer, the seniors on the squad.

"There were definitely leaders," Japenga acknowledged. "Their attitudes stayed solid. That was good to see."
