1947: Special committee declares war on flies

A statewide move to stamp out the menace of flies in Iowa was being translated into action in Hartley. The local fly control committee established the goal of making the community and outlying farms fly-free during the summer.
A large delegation from Hartley was among the throng that jammed Spencer for the 9th District Legion and Auxiliary Convention. Hartley was represented in the colorful parade by a marching group of Legionnaires and the Hartley school band.
