Winners in Legion Auxiliary poppy poster contest

Fourth grade students at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary participated in the annual poppy poster contest which is sponsored by Hartley American Legion Auxiliary Unit #288.

First, second and third place winners, respectively, included Connor Swenson, Kaiden Koerselman and Carter Clancy. They each received a monetary prize as did the other participating students.

The Auxiliary expresses appreciation to Principal Ashley Benz and fourth grade teacher Kim Dokter for their cooperation.

The top winning posters are displayed at Burley's Appliance and the other entries are displayed at Fiesta Foods, both in Hartley.

6th grade graduates at CC/E

Outgoing sixth graders at Clay Central/Everly Elementary were feted May 17 during Breakfast Buddies. The students will now move on to continue their education at other districts, as CC/E is a PK-6 grade school district.

Volunteer umpires needed in Hartley

The summer baseball and softball program in Hartley is need of umpires for the summer season. The rec department is also in need of a director.

NCC ag program ranked #3 by Online Schools

The Agricultural Program at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon has been ranked No. 3 in the Online Schools Guide of the Top 10 Online Agriculture Associate Degrees.

Online Schools Guide provides advice, resources and rankings on the best online undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Editors at OSG found schools offering two-year associate degrees in agriculture online or hybrid, and ranked those programs based on reputation, cost and future salary.

NCC's online two-year AAS degree in agriculture provides students the opportunity to seek employment in numerous careers which include ag sales, farm management, supplies and service, and production.

CC/E menus

Monday, May 23-Thursday, May 26: Cooks' choice for breakfast and lunch.

Milk is served with each meal. Menus are subject to change at any time.

NWI fishing report

Courtesy docks are in place. Area water temperatures have been rising quickly due to very warm weather. Most lakes are in the 60s and at crest or higher levels. Water clarity has been fairly good on most area lakes.

East Okoboji Lake: Lake temperature was in the mid-60s last Thursday. The water level is 3 inches over crest. The walleye season is open. There has been a fairly good crappie bite recently. Anglers using electronics have been fairly successful finding schools of fish.

Black crappie, good. Bluegill, fair. Yellow bass, fair.

Silver Lake (Dickinson): Walleye, fair.

Spirit Lake: Water temperature was in the high 50s to lower 60s last Thursday. The lake is 18 inches below crest, making launching boats more difficult. Courtesy docks are in place. The walleye season is open.

Black crappie, fair. Use a tube jig and bobber. Bluegill, fair. Yellow perch, fair.

West Okoboji Lake: Water temperature was in the upper 50s last Thursday. The water level is 3 inches over crest. The walleye season is open.
