H-M-S crowns 4 conference champs at Hinton

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn moved up two places and more than doubled its team score from a year ago at the War Eagle Conference girls' track and field meet. Hinton hosted this year's event on May 3.

H-M-S had two individuals earn all-conference honors. Emily Mutombo won the long jump with her best distance of 15'6", and Jasmine Lux won the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.28.

Mutombo and Lux also joined Lydia Harders and Abby Otto to win the sprint medley (1:55.17) and 4x100 (:53.12) relays.

Lux finished second in the 100-meter dash (:13.36) and Mutombo was fourth (:13.52). Harders placed third in the 200 (:28.21), while Madison Otto finished third in the 3000-meter run (12:17.88) and finished sixth in the 1500 (5:52.22).

The Hawks also scored team points in four other relays. Placing third were Abby Otto, Emily Otto, Anna Vander Veen and Kylee Schiphoff in the 4x200 (1:59.92), and Vander Veen, Abby Otto, Schiphoff and Harders in the 4x400 (4:35.17).

Schiphoff, Emily Otto, Vander Veen and Madison Otto combined for a fourth-place finish in the distance medley (4:56.09), and Kamryn Ebel, Kayla Kathman, Jocelyn Abonce and Alexis Croatt came in fifth in the 4x800 (12:35.79).

Overall, H-M-S finished third with 83 points. Last year the Hawks finished fifth with 36.

Hinton won the girls' conference title with 136 points and Unity Christian was a close second with 132. Following H-M-S were South O'Brien 74, Gehlen Catholic 70, Remsen St. Mary's 45, MMCRU 23, West Sioux 14, Akron-Westfield 7 and Trinity Christian 4.

H-M-S won two relays and had an individual champion during the Wolverine Relays at Paullina on May 5.

Abby Otto, Emily Mutombo, Lydia Harders and Jasmine Lux combined to win the 4x100 relay (:53.16), and Otto, Kylee Schiphoff, Anna Vander Veen and Harders ran to victory in the 4x200 (1:59.16). Mutombo won the long jump with a leap of 16'3".

Runner-up finishers were Lux in the 100 (:13.52) and Harders in the 400 (1:05.18). Mutombo placed third in the 100 (:13.61); Alexis Croatt came in fourth in the 3000-meter run (13:06.16); and Vander Veen finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:18.57).

The Hawks also placed in three other relays. Harders, Abby Otto, Schiphoff and Lux were third in the 4x400 (4:26.64); and Emily Otto, Frankie Mohni, Kamryn Ebel and Madison Otto placed fourth in the distance medley (5:08.15). The sprint medley relay was an Otto family affair as Megan, Emily, Abby and Madison placed sixth (2:09.07).

H-M-S scored 68 team points to finish fifth. Other team scores were Alta-Aurelia 117, Sioux Central 116, Unity Christian 111, South O'Brien 108, West Bend-Mallard 60 and Trinity Christian 14.
