The deadline to pre-register to vote in the primary election is Monday, May 23. If an eligible elector in Iowa is not already registered to vote, he or she may do so in one of the following ways:

• Register to vote by mail: Voter registration forms are available on your county auditor's website and the completed form should be delivered or mailed to the auditor's office by the deadline;

• Register to vote in person at the auditor's office by May 23, at 5 p.m.

• Register to vote online: Voters may go to https://sos.iowa.gov/ and follow the online voter registration link. An Iowa driver's license or non-operator ID is required for online registration.

Eligible electors may also register to vote on Election Day with both proof of identity and proof of residency. This "same day voter registration" procedure may slow up the voting experience for voters choosing to wait until June 7 to register and vote at the polling site.

Voters do not need to pre-register before every election – you only need to pre-register if you have moved or have a name change. If you have questions about your voter status, call your county auditor's office during normal business hours.

• Methods to file absentee ballot requests

Voters interested in voting absentee for the June 7 primary election may file requests for absentee ballots with the auditor's office.

Due to 2021 legislation, the time period to request absentee ballots has gone from 120 days to 70 days. The new legislation has also shortened the number of days that the auditor's office may have ballots available for absentee voting. Voters now have 20 days to vote absentee either by mail or in-person rather than 29 days.

Voters wishing to receive a ballot by mail for the Primary Election will need to complete an absentee ballot request form and return it to their county auditor's office before 5 p.m. on May 23. In-person absentee voting will begin May 18 at the auditor's office.

Absentee ballot request forms can be found on your county auditor's office website and may also be requested by calling the auditor's office. Forms must include the date the request is signed.

You may receive multiple absentee ballot request forms from political groups, candidates and other private organizations, but only one absentee request form needs to be turned in.
