First-place finishers in two relays and the discus throw were among the top performances by the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys’ track and field team at the John Larson Relays. The meet hosted by North Union was held April 28 at Armstrong.

Ryan Borden, Ethan Diehm, Kooper Ebel and Connor Dodd ran a winning time of 1:35.65 in the 4x200 relay. Those same runners also ran to victory in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:46.48.

Two Hawks sat atop the standings in the discus throw. Adam Schierholz had the best throw, reaching 118’4-1/2” while Keevyn Jacobsma placed second at 113’1-1/2”.

Other strong individual performances were turned in by Dodd, who finished second in the 100-meter dash (:11.17) and fourth in the 200 (:23.33); and Diehm whose leap of 19’1-1/4” was good for third place.

Hawk coach Kyle Borchers said the meet was a chance to compete against different teams and have success in various events.

“It kind of shakes things up and gets us out of any ruts we might be in,” he said. “It’s nice to place high in events and relays that we don’t place as well due to the competition we see around here.”

Varsity team results were Bishop Garrigan 111, Northwood-Kensett 95.33, Estherville-Lincoln Central 90, H-M-S in fourth with 65, West Bend-Mallard 58.66, North Union 56, North Iowa 51, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 50 and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire 12.
