Happy to get on anybody's track

Putting together a complete lineup has been tough for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls’ track and field team, and so has been being able to compete due to the uncooperative nature of the weather.

Some of those issues were overcome last week and the Hawks were ready to take advantage of the opportunities.

“Our girls are hard workers,” said Hawk coach Kirsten Taylor. “They’re happy to get on a track and compete.”

Individual accomplishments during the John Larson Relays at Armstrong included the Top 2 finishes by Jasmine Lux and Emily Mutombo in the 100-meter dash, who ran times of :13.20 and :13.22. Lux also won the 400-meter dash (1:06.01).

Madison Otto was runner-up in the 800-meter run (2:49.61) and placed third in the 3000 (12:53.29). Megan Otto finished fourth in the high jump (4’2”) and Abby Otto was fifth in the 200-meter dash (:30.10).

The Hawks finished third in a pair of relays. Abby Otto, Emily Otto, Frankie Mohni and Kylee Schiphoff ran the 4x200 (2:04.12) and Abby Otto, Emily Otto, Schiphoff and Lux were in the 4x400 (4:50.51). Abby Otto, Mutombo, Schiphoff and Lux added a fourth-place finish in the 4x100 (:54.81).

“We haven’t had a complete team for two or three weeks,” Taylor noted. “We were able to pull together some relays and did pretty fair.”

H-M-S finished fourth out of eight girls’ teams, scoring 64 points. North Union won the meet with 135 points, Bishop Garrigan was second with 92 and Northwood-Kensett came in third with 89. The rest of the team scores were Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 60, North Iowa 59, West Bend-Mallard 51 and Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire 32.

H-M-S is looking forward to the state qualifying meet on May 12 at Lawton. Taylor said the Hawks have a good chance of advancing to state in several events.

• Compete at Okoboji

A one-day postponement of the Okoboji Relays left H-M-S shorthanded, as several girls were involved in the concert at H-M-S that evening.

The Hawks had place-finishers in six events, led by Emily Mutombo who placed in a total of four. She finished third in the 100-meter dash (:13.0), fourth in the long jump (14’6-3/4”) and fifth in the 200 (:28.70) and 400 (1:10.60).

Alexis Grover added a fifth-place finish in the shot put (25’11-1/2”).

Also finishing fifth were Madyson Torres, Kelly Buhrmann, Luna Buchler Alonso and Frankie Mohni in the 4x200 relay (2:20.10).

Sioux Center won the girls’ team title with 165 points and host Okoboji was second with 137. Also competing were Spirit Lake Park 134, Sibley-Ocheyedan 94 and H-M-S 18.

• Junior varsity results at North Union

H-M-S had several junior varsity competitors at the John Larson Relays at Armstrong.

Natalie McDaniels won the girls’ JV discus throw (78’3”) and placed sixth in the shot put (14’7-1/2”).

Jamie Diaz, Kelly Buhrmann, Luna Buchler Alonso and Megan Otto placed third in the 4x200 relay (2:23.10) and fourth in the 4x100 (1:04.84).

In the boys’ JV, Keevyn Jacobsma was second in the shot put (34’7”) and Travis Kamradt was third (33’4-1/2”). Kevin Arambula was ninth in the shot put (24’11”) and 10th in the discus (60’2-1/2”).
