Another win for the golfers

Boys' team shows improvement in pair of meets

Nick Bronstad was second on the leaderboard in the duals with South O'Brien and Sioux Central on April 29.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn split a boys' golf double dual with South O'Brien and Sioux Central on April 29 at Sanborn Golf and Country Club.

South O'Brien edged H-M-S by one stroke (183-184) to win the War Eagle Conference portion of the meet, while the Hawks topped Sioux Central (184-208) to earn the split.

Nick Bronstad shot a 43 and Jack Mastbergen fired a 46 to finish second and fourth on the leaderboard against South O'Brien. Using the same individual scores, Bronstad, Mastbergen and Wyatt Borden (47) were the No. 2, 3 and 4 medalists against Sioux Central.

Also playing were Keith DeBoer 48, Lucas Kroese 50 and Spencer McCarter 51.

"I was very happy with our golfers," said Hawk coach Mark Japenga. "We have definitely improved and continue to improve as the season progresses. Hopefully we can be playing our best golf as sectionals approach."

In conference play on April 28 at Orange City, Unity Christian dominated the top of the leaderboard to defeat H-M-S, 172-188.


Borden was the only Hawk to finish among the Top 4, finishing second with a 43. Other scores were Bronstad 45, Mastbergen 49, DeBoer 51, McCarter 52 and Kroese 58.

The Hawks (2-3, 1-3) finish dual play at West Sioux on May 6 and will compete in the conference boys' tournament on May 9 at The Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center.
