Conservationist program to be offered in Clay Co.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Clay County Conservation Board will offer the Iowa Master Conservationist Program starting on Wednesday, June 22.

The program teaches about Iowa’s natural ecosystems and the diversity of conservation challenges and opportunities that exist in the region. Graduates of the course learn to make informed choices for leading and educating others to improve conservation in Iowa.

“The Master Conservationist program has seen a lot of popularity recently in surrounding counties, so we are excited to partner with our local conservation board to host this program in Clay County,” said Sarah Dirks, Clay County Extension Adult Program Coordinator, in a news release.

The Master Conservationist program consists of approximately 12 hours of online curriculum and seven face-to-face learning sessions.

The online modules include lessons and resources from Iowa State University subject-matter experts to be reviewed at the participants’ own pace at home. Module topics include conservation history and science, understanding Iowa ecosystems, implementing conservation practices in human-dominated landscapes, and developing skills to help educate others about conservation practices.

The seven face-to-face learning sessions will build on the online lessons and be held at various nature and conservation locations in Clay County every Wednesday night from June 22-Aug. 3. Sessions start with a light meal at 5:30 p.m. Each face-to-face meeting will be led by local experts to demonstrate how the principles covered in the online curriculum play out locally.

Registration fee for the course is $40, which includes all course materials and a light supper at each in-person session. Register online at https://go.iastate.edu/MWNZUF or contact the Clay County Extension office at (712) 262-2264. The deadline to register is Friday, June 17.

For more information, contact Dirks at the Extension office or email sdirks@iastate.edu.
