Youth mental health first aid training offered

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host “Youth Mental Health First Aid” for adults who work with youth, on Tuesday, June 14 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center.

Young adults often experience mental health and addiction challenges. This course introduces common mental health challenges for youth and reviews typical adolescent development. Participants will learn a five-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations.

According to Kate Stewart, Extension human sciences program coordinator, this program is for a parent, educator, coach, school staff member, youth pastor, 4-H leader or anyone else who works with youth and teens on a daily basis. It will focus on equipping the adult leader participants with the skills and knowledge to recognize common mental health challenges in youth and teens, and how to connect those youth with appropriate care and support.

Registration fee for “Youth Mental Health First Aid” is $75 per participant which includes a noon meal; however, a $75 coupon code is available for those working with youth living or working in rural areas. Call (712) 957-5045 for the coupon code prior to registering.

Registration is required by June 3 to plan adequately for seating and resource materials; however, space is limited so it is advised to register early. To register, visit https://go.iastate.edu/NIGVJ1.

EMS and Nursing CEUs are available with this program. Participants should also note that due to the location of the training, all participants will be COVID screened upon entry.
