• Four persons taken to hospital after accident

Four persons were taken to area hospitals following an accident that occurred at 8:15 p.m. on March 5.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that Francis Kanas, 38, of Salem, Ore., was driving westbound on B40/400th Street when she applied the brakes to slow her vehicle on the icy road. The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan began to slide, crossed the centerline and entered the south ditch, coming to rest in a cornfield.

All four people in the vehicle complained of pain due to minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Kanas and Salik Eleny, 31, were transported by Hartley Ambulance to the Spencer Hospital, while Richie Rues, 42, of Marathon, and Rintia Beuret, 21, were transported by Sutherland Ambulance to MercyOne Primghar Medical Center.

Damage to the Grand Caravan was estimated at $5,000.

• Semi rollover results in $50,000 in damage

At 4:30 p.m. on March 10, a 2009 Peterbilt tractor and semi-trailer driven by Austin James Richter, 29, of Paullina, was northbound in the 4500 mile of Oak Hill Avenue. According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Richter reached for a water bottle and the semi ran off the road to the right, entered the ditch and overturned on a field driveway. Corn in the trailer spilled into a field and the ditch.

Richter was not injured. Damage to the tractor and semi-trailer was estimated at $50,000.
