1997: ‘Artist In Residence’ spends week at H-M-S

• March 20, 1947

The Hartley band mothers planned to serve meals at the Legion Hall for contestants at the district music contest. They expected to serve 800 meals during the two-day event. The mothers were asking for donations of homemade pies that would be served with the meals.

Abel Anderson, the senior member of the Hartley school board, was elected president at the reorganizational meeting. Harry Olhausen was the only new board member.

The Hartley girls carried off the honors of the junior high girls’ basketball tournament held in Hartley. The local team substituted freely during its 34-6 win over Lake Park and then held off Sanborn to win the championship, 41-32. In the boys’ tournament at Paullina, Hartley defeated Sanborn in the first round, lost the next game to the host team and then defeated Primghar, 40-18, to place third.

• March 16, 1972

Kevin Tewes was the overall winner of the Hartley junior high science fair. His entry was titled “Developing Onion Skin Paper.” Stanley Gable placed first in the biological science division and Steve Meyer and Kim McCarty shared the first prize in physical science with their joint entry.


The town council agreed to the filling of a drainage ditch in east Hartley and the installation of a culvert to drain water from that area. The council also hired Wilbur Wacker as Superintendent of Utilities.

The Hartley Education Association submitted their salary schedule proposals for 1972-73 to the school board. Increases of 3.2 percent were granted to the faculty, and the board approved raises of $450 for Superintendent Howard Borchard and $350 each for principals Charles Schmidt and Peder Buck.


• March 20, 1997

Cam Waters, of St. Paul, Minn., spent the week at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary as “Artist In Residence.” Students met with Waters to experience the development of an original folk song. His main emphasis was to encourage the students’ creativity.

SSG Dale and Jalane Buhrmann, of Hartley, were honored at the annual St. Barbara’s Day celebration. St. Barbara is the patron saint of field artillery. SSG Buhrmann, a member of Battery A of the 1st Bn 194th Field Artillery, received the Iowa Commendation Medal for his support of the family-employer appreciation day of the National Guard. Jalane was recognized with a certificate of appreciation for her support of the Arnolds Park National Guard Day. She was actively involved with Battery A’s family support group as well as at the state level.
