Literacy, math proficiencies 'moving in the right direction'

H-M-S students show improvement since fall screening

Information presented to the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn school board on Feb. 21 highlighted the percentage of students who tested proficient in a series of literacy and math assessments known at FAST. Elementary and middle school students generally showed improvement compared to results of the screenings conducted last fall.

Sixty-six percent of elementary students tested proficient in literacy this winter compared to 57 percent in the fall and 48 percent in the spring of 2021. Math proficiency rose slightly from 67 percent last fall to 69 percent in the winter screenings. The results compare to 5...
