Gracie Knobloch has intentions of setting up for a shot attempt against H-LP. She scored five points in the game.

Statistics weren't impressive and neither was the point total, but the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team did enough to defeat Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire, 38-37, on Jan. 4 at Graettinger.

The game was dominated by turnovers and fouls. H-M-S turned the ball over 28 times and committed 22 fouls. GT/RA's numbers were similar – 27 turnovers and 19 fouls.

The Hawks especially struggled to make foul shots, converting on just 4-of-18 attempts; the Titans were slightly better, making 10-of-22. The one advantage H-M-S had was in field goal shooting, as they converted 16-of-49 attempts compared to 12-of-48 by GT/RA.

H-M-S trailed 14-8 after one quarter but was able to force a 16-16 tie at halftime. A 10-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter gave the Hawks the lead and it proved to be just enough, as the Titans finished with a 16-12 scoring edge in the final period.

Lydia Harders led H-M-S with 15 points, Elise Haack scored eight, Emily Mutombo scored five and Jasmine Lux and Emily Otto added four each.

Harders also topped the Hawks with 14 rebounds and four steals; Kylee Schiphoff grabbed six rebounds; Otto had five rebounds; Haack had four rebounds and two steals; Lux had four rebounds; and Mutombo finished with three rebounds and three steals.

• vs. Harris-Lake Park

Ten straight points in the fourth quarter propelled Harris-Lake Park past H-M-S, 40-36, on Jan. 7 at Lake Park.

The Wolves' scoring run came after more than three quarters of lead changes. H-LP was ahead 10-5 after one quarter, the largest lead by either team in the first half. The Hawks overcame the deficit to go ahead 17-14 at the intermission.

H-M-S fell behind in the third quarter but later led by two. The teams traded scores to begin the final period before H-LP went in front to stay. The margin grew to 10 points and the Hawks could get no closer than the final margin of four.

Haack led H-M-S with 13 points and also had five rebounds and three steals.

Lux scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds; Schiphoff had five points and seven rebounds; Gracie Knobloch scored five points; Harders finished with four points, eight rebounds and three steals; Mutombo had seven rebounds; and Douma had four rebounds.

Shooting woes hampered the Hawks who only made 19 percent of their shots from the floor and 3-of-17 attempts at the foul line.

The win was the first for H-LP since they defeated Clay Central/Everly in the regional tournament in 2019.

H-M-S fell to 3-6 overall and remained winless in War Eagle Conference play (0-4). The Hawks host MMCRU on Jan. 14 and play at South O'Brien on Jan. 18.
