Hartley all-school reunion to be held

The Hartley all-school reunion committee decided last year that the reunion would be moved from being held five years to every three years.

The biggest reason for the change is the age of some of the older graduates. Following some research, the committee determined that other schools have done the same thing for the same reason. Many Hartley graduates have died, and the committee felt it was good to make this change. The years that will be included are up to 1981, as the school changed to Hartley-Melvin starting with the Class of 1982.

The committee needs your help to get present addresses. Some classes have updated their lists. If you have a master list of your class, the committee asks that you send it to Steve Lux, P.O. Box 93, Hartley, IA 51346. Letters will be going out in the next few weeks, so the committee needs the addresses by March 1 if you want to be included.

The reunion will be held in conjunction with the Hartley Summer Celebration the first weekend in August.

Eggs & Issues forums start Jan. 22

Local residents can listen to state lawmakers discuss issues affecting northwest Iowa during the first Eggs & Issues forum on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Other forums are planned on Feb. 19 and March 19. Eggs & Issues are held in the council chambers at Spencer City Hall. Doors will open to the public at 8:30 a.m., with the live session running from 9-10:30 a.m.

Iowa District 1 Sen. Dave Rowley, R-Spirit Lake; District 2 Rep. Megan Jones, R-Sioux Rapids; and District 1 Rep. John Wills, R-Spirit Lake have been invited to each forum, as well as other state elected officials. The event provides constituents a chance to hear from local legislators and address issues that impact northwest Iowa.

The session will be aired live on SMU and taped by Mediacom Cable TV, with both stations replaying the session.

There will be no food provided prior to the forum due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, travel mugs with lids and bottled water will be allowed inside. The formats of the second and third sessions will be re-evaluated depending on where COVID-19 infection rates are for the area.

“Eggs & Issues” are a question/answer format session.

SWCD/CDI auxiliary scholarship deadline is Feb. 18

Conservation Districts of Iowa and the O’Brien County Soil & Water Conservation District are offering several scholarship opportunities to high school seniors to help defray college expenses.

Students interested in conservation and agriculture are eligible to apply. While this is a wide field and many studies qualify, preference will be given to students pursuing programs of study in conservation.

This application will be dual purpose for both the CDI and O’Brien SWCD. The application is available online at http://www.cdiowa.org, and the deadline to submit it to the O’Brien County SWCD office at 315 S. Rerick Avenue in Primghar is Friday, Feb. 18.

CDI is a statewide scholarship with awards of $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000. Winners from each region will receive $500. The first, second and third place awards will be paid directly to the applicant’s school of choice in two equal installments, one upon enrollment at the beginning of the year and second at midterm. The $500 scholarships will be paid directly to the students.

The O’Brien County SWCD scholarship will use the same application so you only need to apply once. They will be awarding two $500 scholarships, each to be awarded at midterm to the student directly.

If you have any questions, contact the SWCD office at (712) 957-3835 ext. #3.

Between the Covers to discuss “Wintering” in January

Between the Covers book club is discussing Katherine May’s “Wintering: the Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times” in January. The group will meet in the front room of Hartley Public Library at 5 p.m. on Tuesday Jan. 25, to discuss the first book of 2022.

“Wintering” by Katherine May is an intimate, revelatory book exploring the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down.

Sometimes you slip through the cracks; unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. “Wintering” explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered.

A moving personal narrative shot through with lessons from literature, mythology and the natural world, May’s story offers instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas.

Newcomers are welcome to join the 2022 Between the Covers Book Club so stop at the library to pick up your copy of “Wintering” to read today.
