• Sentenced for illegal possession of firearms

A Hartley man was sentenced for illegal possession of firearms on Dec. 8 in Sioux City.

Jeremy Walters, 40, was sentenced before United Stated District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand to one year and one day imprisonment. He pled guilty on July 15 to being a prohibited person in possession of firearms. He must also serve a two-year term of supervised release following imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.

Walters was released to self-report to a federal prison once designated.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa, Walters was previously convicted on Aug. 23, 2004 in the Iowa District Court for Clay County of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. Walters also admitted to being an unlawful user of methamphetamine which prohibited him from possessing guns and admitted to possession of five ounces of marijuana along with firearms.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde. It was investigated by law enforcement agencies in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, and the Iowa National Guard.
