Festival of Trees runs thru Dec. 23

This year’s Festival of Trees at the Hartley Public Library will be held now through Dec. 23. The event showcases decorated trees from local businesses and clubs.

Those who visit the display during normal library hours will be able to vote for their favorites in several different categories.

Giving Tree gifts due this Friday

Local residents can once again participate in the H-M-S Giving Tree project this holiday season.

Ornaments are available for pick up at Iowa State Bank and Sanborn Savings Bank in Sanborn; Treimer’s Insurance Agency, United Community Bank and Savings Bank in Hartley; and JR’s in Melvin. Wrapped gifts are due back by Friday, Dec. 10.

Holiday open houses

Several open houses are planned over the coming week in Hartley and Royal. See the ads inside for more details.

Today (Dec. 9), there will be an open house at Century Mutual Insurance in Hartley from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and at Hartley City Hall from noon-4 p.m.

Holiday lighting contest in Hartley

The Hartley Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a holiday lighting contest through Dec. 17. Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

Food distribution Dec. 15 in Hartley

The Food Bank of Iowa’s mobile pantry program will be conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 15, from 4-6 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ in Hartley. The program is available free of charge and geared toward individuals in need of food assistance.

Participants are asked to stay in their vehicles and line up on the east side of the parking lot. The food will be brought to you as you drive under the canopy.

H-M-S Music Dept. holiday concerts

The sounds of the season will be shared by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn students at the following holiday concerts.

Thursday, Dec. 9: Grades 1-2, 6 p.m. and grades 3-4, 7 p.m., high school gym.

Sunday, Dec. 12: High school choir and band concert, 2 p.m., high school gym.

Thursday, Dec. 16: Grades 5-6 band and music, 7 p.m., middle school gym.

Monday, Dec. 20: Grades 7-8 band and choir, 7 p.m., middle school gym.

Blood drive is Dec. 29 in Hartley

The next Hartley community blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 29, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. at the Hartley Community Center. New donors are especially needed.

3 local Al Anon meetings scheduled

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.

All are welcome to attend.

OCCB volunteer Christmas tea is tomorrow at PHC

To say “thank you” to all the volunteers who have shared their time and talents this past year, the O’Brien County Conservation Board will host a volunteer Christmas tea at the Prairie Heritage Center on Friday, Dec. 10, from 2-3 p.m.

All past, present and future volunteers are invited to join in the celebration. Light refreshments will be served and an overview of upcoming events and plans will be shared.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer at the Prairie Heritage Center is invited to attend the event to learn more about opportunities, meet other volunteers and fill out an application. Backyard winter birding program planned at PHC

O’Brien County Conservation Naturalist Abbie Parker will lead an hour-long program on birds you may see this winter and what you can do to create the ultimate birding spot in your own yard.

You will also have the opportunity to create your own feeder to take home. This program is at no cost and is great for people of all ages.

The backyard winter birding program will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the Prairie Heritage Center from 10-11 a.m. Registration is required. Participants can register at https://prairieheritagecenter.org/. Registration is open until Dec. 9.

If weather would lead to a change or cancellation of the backyard winter birding program an announcement will be made on PHC Facebook page and website, ass well as and other local media outlets. For more information or questions contact the Prairie Heritage Center at (712) 295-7200.

HLC food pantry

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.
