Poor second quarter spoils season-opener

H-M-S falls to Sioux Central, 50-36

December 2, 2021

An inability to score in one quarter spoiled the season-opener for the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' basketball team. Sioux Central's 17-4 advantage in the second quarter helped them earn the 50-34 win on Nov. 23 at Sioux Rapids.

H-M-S led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but the second-quarter scoring drought caused them to fall behind by 12 at half time. Sioux Central outscored the Hawks by four over the final 16 minutes to earn their first win.

Lydia Harders and Jasmine Lux scored 11 and 10 points to lead H-M-S, while Emily Otto and Kylee Schiphoff each finished with four.

Elise Haack, Harders and Lux each grabbed six rebounds and Schiphoff added four. Harders had three steals and Lux had two.

The Hawks were at a disadvantage at the free throw line where they were 3-of-5 while Sioux Central was 11-of-17. The Rebels also shot better from the floor and especially outside the three-point arc, connecting on 5-of-17 attempts while H-M-S was 1-of-6.

H-M-S (0-1) hosts Woodbury Central on Dec. 2 and Trinity Christian on Dec. 3.
