Trees needed for ‘Winter Wonderland’

Friends of the Everly Public Library are looking for service groups, clubs, churches, businesses and individuals to decorate and display a Christmas tree or table decoration at “Everly’s Winter Wonderland,” which will be held December 2-3.

Festival of Trees in Hartley is Dec. 6-23

This year’s Festival of Trees at the Hartley Public Library will be held Dec. 6-23. The event is a great opportunity for local businesses and clubs to put their decorating talents to work and showcase the community.

Forms are available by emailing director.lib@hartley.lib.ia.us or visiting the library’s website and filling out a form by clicking on the “Festival of Trees” link under the “Services” tab.

Set up will be held at the library Nov. 29-Dec. 4 during normal hours. Those who visit the display will be able to vote for their favorites in several different categories.

Giving Tree is back

Local residents can once again participate in the H-M-S Giving Tree project this holiday season.

Ornaments are available for pick up at Iowa State Bank and Sanborn Savings Bank in Sanborn; Treimer’s Insurance Agency, United Community Bank and Savings Bank in Hartley; and JR’s in Melvin. Wrapped gifts are due back by Dec. 10.

Trivia night at HCC

The Hartley Community Center will host an ugly sweater trivia night on Saturday, Dec. 4. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Lions Burger Bar

The Hartley Lions Club will hold its annual burger bar on Sunday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hartley Community Center. An ad next week will provide complete details.

Fate of former elementary school to be decided at hearing

The fate of the former Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Elementary will be decided on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.

Board members will decide during a public hearing whether the property should be sold. If they choose to sell it, they will entertain bids from any interested party. Before a sale is finalized, the prospective buyer’s development plan must receive board approval.

The board decided in October to proceed with demolition of the building at 240 1st Street SE. A proposal presented this month by Hestia Investments to renovate the facility led the board to proceed with a possible sale.

Monday, Nov. 29: Breakfast – Cereal, pop tart (9-12), fruit, juice; Lunch – Chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, roll (9-12), oranges.

Tuesday, Nov. 30: Breakfast – Egg/cheese biscuit, fruit, juice; Lunch – Hot dog/bun, French fries, baked beans, mixed fruit.

Milk served with each meal. Fruit/veggie bar served with lunch.

Commercial pesticide applicators should complete CIC

Commercial pesticide applicators need to complete their continuing instruction for the 2021 year. The O’Brien County Extension Office will not schedule commercial Continuing Instruction Course reshows after Dec. 20.

Commercial pesticide applicators needing to attend a 2021 CIC program should contact Marsha Rehder at (712) 957-5045 to schedule an appointment.

H-M-S teams in action next week

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn’s high school basketball teams and the Okoboji/H-M-S wrestlers will be in action to begin the first full week of the 2021-22 seasons.

H-M-S will host Woodbury Central for JV/varsity basketball games on Dec. 2, and the wrestlers will compete in a double dual hosted by Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire that evening.

The Hawk girls did open their season on Nov. 23. Results will be published in next week’s issue, which will also feature the Sentinel-News’ winter sports preview tab.

Private pesticide applicators CIC

The ISU Extension and Outreach Office in O’Brien County will offer three private pesticide trainings for the 2021-22 season.

These will be held on Dec. 9, at the Paullina Legion starting at 9:30 a.m .; March 1 at the Primghar Community Center starting at 1:30 p.m .; and April 7 at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon starting at 7 p.m. Pesticide applicators received a brochure in the mail and need to complete their form or register online at https://bit.ly/PrivatePesticide.

Regular hours at Royal library

Hours at the Royal Public Library are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Food pantry at Hope Lutheran

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Al Anon meetings

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.
