• Leaves scene of accident

A Calumet man was cited for leaving the scene of an accident that occurred on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was notified of a possible accident involving a vehicle that became disabled in the center of an intersection in Calumet. The reporting party stated they saw the driver get out of a 1997 Buick LeSabre that appeared freshly damaged, look at the vehicle and walk home. The deputy located the vehicle at the intersection of North Morse Avenue and West North Street in Calumet. He followed an oil trail to Highway 59 but soon lost it.

Suspecting the driver had come from Sutherland, the deputy located an accident scene approximately one-half mile east of Highway 59 on 480th Street. Several items had been thrown from the vehicle and left at the scene, including a rear taillight section bearing an Iowa license plate that matched the vehicle left disabled in Calumet.

The deputy reported he attempted to make contact with the individual identified as the driver of the disabled vehicle. Dale Alan Shriver, 61, of Calumet, was reported to have seen the deputy and ran to the bedroom of his house and would not answer the door. The deputy knocked for approximately 15 minutes but Shriver allegedly did not respond.

The report stated that Shriver was taken to a hospital the next day for treatment of minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage to the Buick was estimated at $1,000. Shriver was cited for Failure to Maintain Control, Failure to Maintain or Use Safety Belts-Adult and Leaving Scene of Accident-Injury.

• Thrown from tractor

A grain truck and tractor were involved in an accident on A46 west of Ashton on Nov. 9.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, a 2000 Peterbilt grain truck owned by Ronald Julius and driven by Clifford Kruger, 62, of George, was eastbound on A46 when a 2013 John Deere tractor, owned by Osceola County and driven by Daniel Petersen, 49, of May City, pulled out in front the truck. The semi struck the tractor as it was entering the eastbound lane of A46. The impact of the collision spun the tractor around and caused Petersen to be ejected from the cab.

The accident happened as a county road crew was putting gravel down on the shoulder edge of the westbound lane of A46. The tractor was pulling a packer and roller when Petersen attempted to turn around at a residential driveway and head east on A46. The report stated that a blind spot may have been the cause of the accident because several county maintenance vehicles were ahead of Petersen and parked on A46 ahead of where he attempted to turn around.

Petersen was taken by ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center and later released. Kruger was not injured. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Ashton Fire Department, Ashton Ambulance and Sibley Ambulance.

• Collide at intersection

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office investigated an accident that occurred on Nov. 11 at 1:53 p.m.

According to the report, Charlotte Petersen, 86, of Sutherland, was stopped at the intersection of 360th Street and M38. She started to make a left turn onto M38 when her vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by Debra Munden, 58, of Royal.

A passenger in the Munden vehicle was privately transported to Spencer Hospital with possible injuries. Damage to Munden’s 2011 Ford Fiesta and Petersen’s 2000 Chevrolet S10 was estimated at $2,000 each. Peterson was cited with Failure to Obey Stop Sign.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by Everly Rescue and Bud’s Service.

• Semi leaves roadway

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 2006 Peterbilt tractor/semi-trailer driven by Daryl Roy Kats, 55, of Rock Valley, was northbound on Highway 60 when it left the roadway to the left, crossed the center median and jackknifed, blocking both southbound lanes. The report indicated the accident occurred during blowing snow and severe winds, and ice/frost on the road surface.

Kats was transported by Sheldon Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center with minor/non-incapacitating injuries. Damage to the semi owned by Eisma Express Inc., of Ireton, was estimated at $5,000.
