20 welcomed into NHS chapter at H-M-S

The membership of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn chapter of the National Honor Society grew significantly with the addition of 20 initiates. They were inducted in a ceremony on Nov. 1.

Advisor Jim Thomas said that more than 35 students were eligible to be considered for induction. Criteria for membership include a minimum 3.5 grade point average after four semesters and effective demonstration of the four qualities that are important to NHS.

Senior initiates were Keith DeBoer and Emily Heneman. Juniors welcomed into the chapter were Jaela Anliker, Joseph Billings, Anissa Bush, Ethan Diehm, Bryce Dodge, Kooper Ebel, Alyssa Gibbons, Morgan Grooters, Elise Haack, Travis Kamradt, Abigail Kunzman, Emily Mutombo, Juliana Pasillas, Emma Schmillen, Tanner Tesch, Tyson Tessum, Trenton Vollink and Bradley Zamudio.

President Kaley Pearson introduced the initiates as well as guest speaker Nicole (Lux) Roder. A 1993 graduate of H-M-S, Roder is currently principal at Rock Valley High School. She commended the initiates for achieving the honor of induction into the National Honor Society and for their contributions to H-M-S.

"It is a great honor to see you inducted," Roder said. "You work hard in school and you are leaders in some way in your school."

Chapter officers highlighted qualities valued by the NHS. Vice President Brenton Thomas spoke on leadership, Secretary Anna Vander Veen focused on service, Treasurer Lydia Harders addressed scholarship and Officer at Large Connor Dodd emphasized character.

Other members of the H-M-S chapter are Jasmine Lux, Lily Rons and Christian Voss.
