Pediatric COVID-19 vax clinics planned

COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5 through 11 years has been approved and recommended by the Food & Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Locally, several options will be available for pediatric COVID-19 vaccines.

Clay County Public Health will be offering COVID-19 vaccinations for children in the approved age range.

“While our team welcomes the opportunity to work with families of young children, we also encourage them to consider all of their vaccination options, including Avera Medical Group Spencer and our area pharmacies,” said Colette Rossiter, Clay County Public Health coordinator, in a news release. “We know that people are often looking to schedule their vaccinations around work, school, and a myriad of activities, so looking at all options will give them the most flexibility in scheduling.”

Clay County Public Health will be hosting special vaccination clinics for patients ages 5 years through 11 years of age beginning the week of Nov. 15. Pediatric COVID-19 vaccination clinics will be held on Monday, Nov. 15 from 3-6 p.m .; on Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 5-6 p.m .; and on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 3-6 p.m.

Vaccinations are by appointment only and a parent or guardian must accompany their child throughout the vaccination process. The clinic will be held in the Clay County Public Health Immunization Suite, which is located on the second floor of the Spencer Medical Arts Building, the same facility, which houses Avera Medical Group Spencer. Appointments can be made online and the link can be found on the COVID-19 vaccination page on Spencer Hospital’s website.

The Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11 are administered in a two-dose primary series, 3 weeks apart. They will receive one-third of the adult dose of Pfizer vaccine.
