Veterans Day program in Hartley

Elaine Leusink, of Sioux Center, will deliver the keynote address during the Veterans Day program on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m., inside the H-M-S Event Center in Hartley. Leusink is a Gold Star mother who lost her son, Lance Cpl. William Leusink, in Iraq in 2006. She will discuss the experience of a Gold Star family and what it means to be a military family.

Another program with H-M-S Elementary students is planned the same day at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend both events.

Gem & Junque Sale is Saturday

The 17th Annual Gem & Junque Sale will be held this Saturday, Nov. 6 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley. The event is sponsored by St. Paul’s LWML and Thrivent, with all proceeds donated to Camp Okoboji.

A bake sale will also be held. Lunch this year includes a hot beef or turkey sandwich, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad bar, dessert bar and beverage. See the ad on Page 6 for more details.

Hartley firemen’s breakfast is Nov. 7

The Hartley Firefighters’ Association will be holding its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 7. The meal includes pancakes, French toast and sausages.

The pancake breakfast will be held at the Hartley Community Center from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Dine in, curbside pick up and carry out options available.

Vets breakfast at Legion next week

All Hartley and Everly-area veterans, along with their spouses, are invited to a free appreciation breakfast on Nov. 11 hosted by the Hartley American Legion Auxiliary.

A meal of biscuits and sausage gravy, coffee and juice will be served. See the ad on Page 6 for more details.

Vets supper is Nov. 11

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley is hosting a complimentary supper for local veterans on Nov. 11. R.S.V.P. by today (Nov. 4) to reserve your spot by calling (712) 728-2711.

Everly Heritage Museum opening

The Everly Heritage Museum will hold a grand opening bash on Friday, Nov. 12 featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and concert fundraiser. Tours of the new museum will be held the following day on Nov. 13.

Celebrate National Bison Day at PHC

Help celebrate the largest land mammal in North America – the bison – at a celebration of National Bison Day on Saturday, Nov. 6, hosted by O’Brien County Conservation. The celebration is a come-and-go event from 1-3 p.m. at the Prairie Heritage Center.

This event will have a wide variety of activities and information on bison, both indoors and outdoors. Guests can try their hand at atlatls, create bison crafts, learn fun facts, view the bison herd at the Prairie Heritage Center, and so much more. National Bison Day will be a fun and educational event for the whole family to honor these majestic animals.

Mini naturalists will explore world of spiders

The O’Brien County Conservation board invites youth ages 2-5 to join for a great hands-on introduction to the natural world in the Mini Naturalists program. This hour-long program will focus on a different topic each month and may include games, story time, crafts and interactive experiences.

November’s program will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Dog Creek Park from 10-11 a.m., and will explore the world of spiders. Mini Naturalists will enjoy a book all about spiders, sing some songs and play some spider games. They will even make a fun spider to take home!

Explore the past on the prairie Nov. 16

Explore what it would have been like to be a prairie pioneer on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at the Prairie Heritage Center, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Explore the past and have some hands-on experiences to see what it would have been like to be one of the first settlers.

Free customer service workshop at Spencer

A one-hour customer service workshop for managers and front-line employees of businesses will be presented Monday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Clay County office in Spencer.

The workshop will focus on best practices in attracting and retaining customers. It is designed for front-line employees and managers who interact with the public including retail, services, convenience stores, restaurants, attractions and lodging.

Participants will learn how to inspire more travelers to stop at their community, stay longer and keep returning; and how to attract visitors to their own business and increase their customer base through the “Five Steps of Excellent Customer Service.”

The program was developed by Extension economic development staff at the request of Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa’s three tourism regions.
