In one of the first instances of the commercial use of the Hartley airport, the Capitol Theatre received part of its Sunday film, “The Green Years,” by plane from Omaha, Neb. Due to some shipping error only part of the film arrived by the usual method and a special plane trip from Omaha was necessary.

Duane R. Wehler, of Everly, was promoted to the rank of captain. He was assigned to the 168th Vet. Food Inspection Detachment in Berlin, Germany. He was in charge of inspecting all food entering Berlin for the U.S. Army, and gave medical treatment to the pets of U.S. personnel and the 100 horses of the 16th Constabulary Squadron.

At a reorganizational meeting of persons interested in scouting, William Olhausen, Jr. accepted the part of scoutmaster and Val Kramer, assistant. The troop was assured of the full-fledged support of the Chamber of Commerce.

• Oct. 28, 1971

Gov. Robert Ray expressed his appreciation to members of the Governor’s Educational Advisory Committee for more than two years of voluntary study of Iowa’s educational system. Mrs. Ruth Riessen, of Hartley, was among those who served on the 22-member panel.

The Hartley Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting, during which Mark Iverson, Lacy Jackson, Ken Mergen and Ed Robinson were elected to two-year terms on the board of directors. The need for more housing in the community was discussed. Spencer Foods reported that only about 10 families of the workforce of 65 persons lived in Hartley, and the number of employees was to more than double.

A team of 23 educators was evaluating Hartley High School. The evaluation was conducted by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, of which the local school had been a member since 1969.

• Oct. 31, 1996

Lance E. Dunkelberger, son of Randy and Lorna Dunkelberger, reenlisted in the United States Air Force. The reenlistment occurred in the Pentagon, in the office of the Chief of the Security Police. The 1993 graduate of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School advanced to the rank of SRA, pay grade E-4. He was serving with the 89th Security Police Squadron at Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

Brad Price, co-owner of over 40 Godfather’s Pizza franchises including the one in Hartley, was the speaker at the Chamber of Commerce’s fall meeting. Price stated that Godfather’s Pizza was pleased with business in Hartley and enjoyed being part of the community. Elected to the Chamber board were Mac Kluch, Cheryl Petersen and Dawn Johnson. Dave Hennings chose not to run for re-election.
