Hartley firemen to canvass town for pancake feed

The Hartley Firefighters’ Association will be holding its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 7. Prior to the event, the firefighters will be canvassing town and selling tickets on Monday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. Leave your porch light on if you’re interested in buying tickets

Soup supper planned at St. Joe’s

Discover night eyes during night hike

Join the O’Brien County Conservation naturalist for a night hike this October and explore with night eyes. This family friendly night hike will be on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., and lasts approximately an hour.

Participants will be led on a hike on the trails at the Prairie Heritage Center to see what night eyes they can find and any other spooky creatures that go bump in the night.

Youth pheasant hunt Oct. 23 at Crosbie Center

A youth pheasant hunt will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Crosbie Wildlife & Nature Youth Center. To participate youth must be between the ages of 12 and 15 years old.

The pheasant hunt will begin at 8 a.m., with a warm-up trap shoot beginning at 8:30 a.m. Adult mentors will then take youth on a one-on-one pheasant hunt to follow. Participants need to wear weather appropriate clothing and closed-toed shoes. They may bring their own guns. Guns will also be available for those who need them.

Hartley-area poets to meet Oct. 28

The Hartley Poets Group will meet on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m., at the Hartley Public Library. All local poets are invited to attend.

Additionally, the group will host its annual poetry reading on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m., at the library. All local poets are invited to attend and participate. The general theme is fall.

Interested poets need to submit up to six pieces to the Hartley Public Library by Oct. 28 so the program can be printed for the following Wednesday.

Refreshments will be provided, and new poets are welcome. Part of the program will be dedicated to Betty Taylor, who was the group’s inspiration and mentor.

Feenstra office reps to visit area

Representatives from the office of Rep. Randy Feenstra (IA-04) will be in area counties to help constituents with casework relating to passports, veterans’ benefits, and other federal programs.

Pesticide applicators course offered Nov. 10

Iowa State University and Outreach O’Brien County office will host an Ornamental and Turfgrass Applicators Continuing Instruction Course for commercial pesticide applicators on Wednesday, Nov. 10.

The program provided by the Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) can be seen at the O’Brien County Extension office in Primghar.

Preregistration may be required and walk-ins on the day of the program are not guaranteed admission. Walk-ins will only be admitted if room allows. The course runs from 9-11:30 a.m. The registration fee is $35 on or before Nov. 3 and $45 after Nov. 3. The course will provide continuing instructional credit for commercial pesticide applicators certified in categories 3O, 3T and 3OT. The IDALS-required topics to be covered are application equipment use, maintenance, and calibration, safe application techniques including pesticide drift reduction, and pests and pest management including phytotoxicity as appropriate.

Healthy Relationship Education Training Nov. 10 at Spirit Lake

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a training opportunity for professionals who directly serve families in northern Iowa.

The Healthy Relationship Education Training is a one-day training where professionals gain access to a toolkit that includes activities and lessons for use with couples (married or not) to encourage healthy relationships between co-parents. The training will be held Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Dickinson County Expo Center in Spirit Lake.

Healthy Relationship Education Training is designed for professionals who work with children and families to increase access to relationship education as a strategy to meet the safety, permanency and well-being needs of children.

Mackenzie Johnson, an Extension human sciences specialist, said the program uses a research-based curriculum that is being implemented nationally to professionals to help them encourage the development of healthy couple relationships with their clients. The all-day class consists of eight modules which are based on the National Extension Relationship and Marriage Education Model.

Lori Korthals, a human sciences specialists in family wellbeing, and Johnson will lead the training which consists of interactive lessons and discussions. Professionals who attend the training will leave with a copy of the toolkit, an understanding of the important aspects of couple relationship education and the option to receive continuing education hours.

ISU Extension and Outreach will offer 6.0 professional education contact hours for social workers, marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors. Iowa social workers, LMFTs and LMHCs should contact their licensing board to determine course approval for continuing education contact hours.

‘Money Smart’ program begins Nov. 4 at Spencer

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host “Money Smart: Prioritizing Bills, Managing Debt & Improving Credit,” a three-session money management program beginning Thursday, Nov. 4, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

The program seeks to help individuals sharpen their money management skills, learn key financial concepts and practice building real-life financial strategies.

According to Brenda Schmitt, an Extension human sciences specialist in family wellbeing, “Money Smart” tools and ideas help individuals take control of their financial situation. The program provides participants with money management resources to help them manage their money more effectively, make better financial decisions and live according to their priorities.

Participants will explore ways to improve their financial wellbeing by developing an emergency spending plan, creating a prioritized bill paying strategy, finding ways to manage debt, learning about the importance of credit reports and exploring ways to improve a person’s credit score.

The workshop series is presented in three one-hour sessions, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Nov. 4, Nov. 9, and Nov. 11. The three sessions are free but pre-registration is required. To preregister, visit https://bit.ly/smart18672 or call (712) 262-2264.
