Final test before the big meets

H-M-S cross country runners compete at G-LR/CL Invite

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country runners competed in the George-Little Rock/Central Lyon Invitational on Oct. 7. The meet held at the Otter Valley course was a final tune-up before the upcoming War Eagle Conference and state qualifying meets.

Madison Otto paced the H-M-S girls with a 15th place finish, running a time of 23:14. Kamryn Ebel placed 44th (25:49), Gracie Knobloch finished 47th (27:27) and Ashleigh Vermeer (28:41) and Juliana Pasillas (29:01) were 49th and 50th, respectively.

Sioux Center and Sibley-Ocheyedan were deadlocked at the top of the team standings with 44 points each. George-LR/CL was third with 71. Other competing teams were Okoboji 77, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 144, West Lyon 156 and H-M-S 193.

The Hawk boys' fastest time was recorded by George Vargas who completed the course in 20:03 to finish 26th. Bryce Dodge placed 35th (21:08), Aiden Jensen was 40th (21:52), Aiden Bush (22:31) and Ryan Grotluschen (22:54) finished 43rd and 44th, while Damian Dodge (23:51) and Blaine Finster (23:52) came in 47th and 48th.


Gavin Faulkner finished 32nd in the boys' JV race with a time of 25:54.

Okoboji won the boys' varsity team title with 34 points while Sioux Center was second with 44. The remaining team scores were George-LR/CL 88, B-H/RV and Sibley-Ocheyedan 117, West Lyon 155, Trinity Christian 182 and H-M-S 188.

H-M-S competed in the conference meet on Monday. Look for results in next week's issue. The Class 1A state qualifying meet will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, at Holstein.
