Hawks drop all 3 matches in pool play

Unable to consistently string points together, the home team came up short in three pool matches during the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn volleyball tournament on Sept. 25.

The Hawks fell behind in both sets of their 21-8, 21-8 loss to Okoboji and also in a 21-6, 21-4 loss to Gehlen Catholic. H-M-S briefly led both sets in the match with Sioux City West but could not hold the momentum in a 21-10, 21-6 loss.

Pool A records were Gehlen Catholic 3-0, Sioux City West 2-1, Okoboji 1-2 and H-M-S 0-3. Records in Pool B were Newell-Fonda 3-0, Rock Valley 2-1, Trinity Christian 1-2 and South O'Brien 0-3. Gehlen Catholic topped Rock Valley and Newell-Fonda swept West in the semifinals.

In a battle of rated teams, Gehlen Catholic (1A No. 3) swept Newell-Fonda (1A No. 7) to claim the championship trophy.

• vs. Remsen St. Mary's

Remsen St. Mary's had enough offensive power to keep H-M-S out of the win column in War Eagle Conference play on Sept. 21 at Remsen.

St. Mary's had a slight advantage statistically in kills (25-17), but nearly 30 more serve attempts (74-46) provided more scoring opportunities in the 25-11, 25-20, 25-16 sweep.

Defensively, Jasmine Lux had one solo block and an assist. Elise Haack came up with 14 digs, Abby Kunzman had 12, Frankie Mohni had five, and Emily Mutombo and Kaley Pearson each had three.

Lux also led the offense with 11 kills, while Emily Otto and Haack each had three. Pearson contributed 12 set assists and Mohni had three.

Serving leaders were Pearson, 10-10; Mutombo, 9-10; Haack, 5-5; Mohni, 4-4; Kunzman, 7-10; and Lux, 3-4.

H-M-S (0-12, 0-5) hosts Harris-Lake Park on Monday, Oct. 4 (Senior Night). The match with South O'Brien scheduled for Sept. 30 has been changed to Thursday, Oct. 7.
