Hawks hyped up for Homecoming

H-M-S Homecoming runs Oct. 4-8

Homecoming festivities at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn kick off next Monday and run through Friday, when the Hawks take on Hinton at Peterson Field at 7 p.m. Coronation is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 5 in the H-M-S Event Center at 7 p.m.

The pep rally is set to begin Friday, Oct. 8 at 12:45 p.m., with the parade to follow at 2:15 p.m. in downtown Hartley. The community is invited to participate.

Ten seniors are vying for the king and queen crowns next week.

Queen Candidates

Lydia Harders, of Hartley, is the daughter of Brenda Harders. She is involved in football cheerleading, Dance Attack, basketball, track and field, FFA, FCA, National Honor Society, band and flags.

Her favorite thing about school is Spanish class with Ms. Dulin. Her favorite memory is dressing up as "Tiger King" last Homecoming with Anna and Emma and getting their photo shoot posted on the school website.

Harders plans to attend Central College and study pre-med.

Jasmine Lux, of Hartley and Sanborn, is the daughter of Tricia and Jake Elgersma and Mathias and Laura Lux. She is involved in volleyball, basketball, track, dance, band, jazz band, choir, jazz choir, solo-ensemble, BPA, FCA and National Honor Society.

Her favorite things about school are saying hi or making faces to people in the hallway and making them smile. Her favorite memory is accidentally setting off the fire alarm with a smoke machine during the Halloween trunk-or-treat event.

Lux plans to go to college for a degree in Biology and then get her DVM to be a zoo veterinarian.

Kaley Pearson, of Hartley, is the daughter of Jeremy and Trisha Pearson. She is involved in volleyball, golf, band, jazz band and National Honor Society.

Her favorite thing about school is being around her peers and teachers, and her favorite memory is losing to Anna in a game of spoons during Spanish class.

Pearson plans to attend Kirkwood Community College to get her degree in dental hygiene.

Megan Ten Kley, of Hartley, is the daughter of Heather and Shane Ten Kley. She is involved in football and basketball cheerleading, FFA and golf.

Her favorite thing about school is going to national and state FFA conventions, while her favorite memory is meeting new people at the conventions.

Ten Kley plans to attend college and become an early childhood education teacher.

Anna Vander Veen, of Hartley, is the daughter of Steve and Melissa Vander Veen. She is involved in National Honor Society, student council, FFA, FCA, Lutheran Youth Fellowship, band, jazz band, Dance Attack, football and basketball cheerleading, track and tumbling.

Her favorite thing about school is getting to see everyone every day and socializing. Her best memory is seeing peoples' reactions to her eating a full rack of ribs at both state FFA and state track.

Vander Veen plans to attend the University of Iowa to study radiology.

King Candidates

Wyatt Borden, of Sanborn, is the son of Ruth and Scott Borden. He is involved in football, basketball, golf, baseball, student council and FCA.

His favorite things about school are the 3:20 bell and bus rides back from games. His best memory is all the times spent hanging out with the boys, sports and being menaces in public with his cronies.

Borden plans to attend NCC and pursue a degree in accounting.

Mason Brinkman, of Sanborn, is the son of Tim and Anne Brinkman. He is involved in football, basketball, track and National Honor Society.

Both his favorite thing about school and best memory are goofing around with friends. Brinkman plans to attend college for business management.

Nick Bronstad, of Hartley, is the son of Gary Bronstad and Stephanie Bronstad. He is involved in football, wrestling, golf, baseball, quiz bowl, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, student council and FFA.

His favorite thing about school is spending time with friends. His fondest memory is making it to state wrestling with the whole school's support.

Bronstad plans to wrestle in college.

Connor Dodd, of Hartley, is the son of Chris and Tammy Dodd. He is involved in football, track and National Honor Society.

His favorite memory is hanging out with friends. His best memory is the Romeo and Juliet play in English 9 with Doug DeGroot.

Dodd plans to attend college and play football, hopefully graduating with a good job and no debt.

Jesse Garcia, of Hartley, is the son of Bryan Rawlings and Jenny Morataya. He is involved in track and football.

His favorite thing about school is watching Connor and Nick's bromance. His best memory is getting lit in track with coach Borchers and the track team.

Garcia plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or Iowa State University.
