Virtual training for foster and adoptive parents

Seasons Center for Behavioral Health in Spencer will host a free virtual training on Monday, Nov. 8 for current and prospective foster and adoptive parents as well as professionals who work closely with foster and adoptive parents and children. The training titled “Behavior is Communication” will be led by Permanency Support Specialist Sherri Huizenga and Outpatient Therapist Brittany Krause.

According to Seasons Center, it takes years for children to develop the proper language and emotional intelligence to communicate how they are feeling. As parents and professionals who work with children, it can be difficult to tell what a child’s behavior may really mean. This session will cover the function of behavior for children, how to translate behavior into communicated needs and desires, and how to support good patterns of communication through the lens of trauma and brain development.

“At this training, we’ll dive into the behavior further and try to understand what the behavior is trying to say so we as caregivers can do our best in helping the child express themselves in healthier ways,” Krause said.

The training will occur virtually via Zoom from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Attendees can register via Eventbrite. Zoom links will be provided to those who register via email 1-2 weeks prior to when the training occurs. For those with limited access to internet, a dial-in option will be available. Attendees may also opt to submit anonymous questions pre-training for the question and answer panel portion of this event.

Online registration for the event is available at https://bit.ly/2Z1X66b. Registration links can also be found on the Events page of the Seasons Center website (www.seasonscenter.org) or on the Seasons Center Facebook Events page.

Celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 3-9

October 3-9 is National 4-H Week, during which millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will be celebrating everything 4-H.

The theme of this year’s National 4-H Week is “Find Your Spark,” which highlights how 4-H encourages kids to take part in hands-on learning experiences in areas such as health, science, agriculture and civic engagement.

The positive environment provided by 4-H mentors ensures that kids in every county and parish in the country, from urban neighborhoods to suburban schoolyards to rural farming communities, are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles and are empowered with the skills to lead in life and career.

“4-H Week is all about showcasing the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people,” said Beth Bunkers, regional youth program specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in a news release. “We look forward to highlighting the remarkable 4-H youth in our communities who work each day to make a positive impact on those around them.”

Each county in northwest Iowa will celebrate a little differently, but all across the nation National 4-H Week will be observed.

For more information on the Iowa 4-H Youth Development program, please contact your local ISU Extension and Outreach office or visit the Iowa 4-H website at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h.

Many upcoming events at Everly Public Library

The kids are back in school and the fair is over, but the Everly Public Library is showing no signs of slowing down.

The facility has remained quite busy, with twice-weekly chair yoga and two monthly adult and children programs highlighting the lineup. October kicks off with Ms. Bri from Clay County Conservation visiting on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. She will also visit Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. for an adult program. The little ones’ programs will continue at 10 a.m. on Mondays, with great volunteers leading each session. The programs provide an awesome time for the kids to get together and socialize (as well as their parents).

The ceramic painting programs with D & L Ceramics have continued to be popular, with the September lighted Christmas tree event being a hit. During October, participants will be glazing a nativity scene. This event will run from Oct. 11-19. This will allow for people to come in at their convenience and really spend some time on their pieces.

Each Monday starting on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m., the library will host weekly craft nights throughout the winter season. Organizers are encouraging people to come in and make themselves at home in the library’s social areas and get rid of the winter blahs. Each month will focus on a different craft, but anyone is free to join doing whatever they enjoy. October’s focus hobby is crochet. Several experts are coming in to help with teaching, and kits of supplies are available for checkout. November’s focus hobby will be knitting – perfect for creating a Christmas present for someone special.

Everly’s trick-or-treating is Sunday, Oct. 31. The library will be hosting a small gathering for the goblins and ghouls from 4:30-5:30 p.m., with trick-or-treating running from 5-7. Be looking for information about this and other upcoming events on the library’s Facebook page under The Everly Public Library.
