• Accident investigation leads to citations

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office investigated a single-vehicle accident that occurred at 9:39 p.m. on Aug. 27.

The sheriff’s office received a report from Collin David McKee, 24, of Hartley, that he was involved in an accident. He stated that he was alone and was not injured. McKee told authorities he was taking a vehicle back to the owner, Travis Sterler, when the accident occurred.

According to the report, physical evidence at the scene showed the vehicle crossed the intersection of 330th Street and Redwing Avenue at a high rate of speed, and that McKee allegedly did not stop at the stop sign. He lost control of the 2005 GMC Envoy which swerved twice before coming to rest in the south ditch on the driver’s side. The report stated a large number of open beer containers and one with beer in it were found. The driver and passenger seat belts were locked and latched, but were tight against the seat.

Authorities stated that McKee returned home before calling the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement was unable to speak to McKee because he would not answer the door or his phone. His mother checked on his welfare, but would not provide help to the sheriff’s office.

Damage to the Envoy was estimated at $12,000. Citations listed on the report were Failure to Obey Stop Sign and Yield Right of Way, Failure to Maintain Control, Open Container-Driver 21 Years Old and Older, and Failure to Maintain or Use Safety Belts-Adult.

The accident occurred on Highway 10, at 5:12 p.m. on Aug. 24.

No injuries were reported. Damage estimates were $2,000 for the F250 and $1,500 for the Tahoe. Horstman was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Reasonable and Proper Rate.

Connie Jo Post, 49, was westbound in the 5100 mile of 390th Street traveling at a high rate of speed. According to the sheriff’s report, Post failed to obey the stop sign located at the intersection of 390th Street and Nettle Avenue. Her 2014 Honda CRV went airborne and entered the north ditch of the 4900 mile of 390th Street. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to rest on its wheels.
