Ups and downs in net opener

Hawks drop 3 matches at West Lyon tourney

The 2021 volleyball season got off to a winless start for Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at a tournament hosted by West Lyon on Aug. 24.

A similar pattern developed in the matches against Akron-Westfield and West Sioux. The Hawks could not get on track in the opening sets and lost by identical 21-10 scores. They were competitive in the second sets against the Westerners and Falcons, but could not get over the hump in 21-17 losses.

West Lyon swept H-M-S in the final match by scores of 21-5, 21-10.

Individually, Jasmine Lux led H-M-S with eight kills and Emily Otto had six. Abby Douma had two solo blocks and an assist while Lux had two block assists.

Kaley Pearson and Emily Mutombo each had eight set assists.

Serving leaders for the tournament were Pearson, 13-of-14 with three aces; Abby Kunzman, 15-of-16; and Mutombo, 10-of-11.

Leading the back row defense was Elise Haack with 13 digs. Kunzman finished with eight digs, Abby Otto had seven, Mutombo had six and Pearson came up with five.


H-M-S (0-3) plays at Trinity Christian on Sept. 7 and at West Sioux on Sept. 9.
