Samuel Heyn repeats as all-conference 1st team pick

H-M-S lands 2 others on War Eagle postseason teams

Three players from Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, including a repeat honoree, have been named to the 2021 all-War Eagle Conference baseball teams.

Senior Samuel Heyn was named to the first team for the second consecutive season. Another senior, Dawson Schiphoff, was included on the second team while freshman Jacob Cates is an honorable mention selection.

Schiphoff and Cates were named to the all-conference team for the first time.

Nineteen players are first-team selections, while 15 were named to the second team and 11 were honorable mention. The number of players from each of the 11 teams in the War Eagle Conference is determined by its place in the final standings.

• Additional postseason honors for H-M-S players

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn baseball players have received additional recognition for their performances on the diamond and in the classroom.

Samuel Heyn, a senior at H-M-S, was named to the 2021 Class 1A northwest district team that was selected by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. He was named to the second team as a pitcher.

This is the second year that Heyn has been named to the all-district squad. He was an honorable mention selection as a junior.

"That is a tough one to get kids on," Hawk coach Jeremy Gloden noted.

The War Eagle Conference is also recognizing the accomplishments of senior athletes in the classroom. Senior participants with a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or above for conference sports received the recognition.

Two of the four seniors who qualified are from H-M-S. They are Ben Haack and Samuel Heyn.

The other honorees ware Zach Kraft, of Gehlen Catholic, and Cade Pepper, of MMCRU.
