• Estherville man arrested on drug charges

An Estherville man faces several charges following a traffic stop that occurred on July 10 at 3:40 a.m., near the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 60.

An O’Brien County deputy stopped a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 for an equipment violation. Further investigation discovered that the license of William Bingen, 34, of Estherville, was banned and suspended. He is also required to carry SR-22 insurance on the vehicle, which he did not have.

The Sheldon Police Department arrived and K9 Balin was deployed to conduct an exterior sniff of the truck. K9 Balin had a positive indication and the truck was seized.

After a search warrant was granted deputies searched the vehicle. Methamphetamine and numerous pieces of drug paraphernalia were allegedly located.

Bingen was booked into the O’Brien County jail and charged with Driving While Barred, an aggravated misdemeanor; Driving While Suspended and Failure to Have SR-22 Insurance, both simple misdemeanors; Possession of Methamphetamine-1st Offense, a serious misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.

• Traffic stop leads to drug arrests

Two women were arrested during a traffic stop that occurred on June 10 at 11:53 p.m. The report stated that an O’Brien County deputy stopped on a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche for an equipment violation near South 3rd Avenue and Wyman Street in Sheldon. The vehicle was driven by Melea Speelman, 28, of Ruthven. The Sheldon Police Department and K9 Balin conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle. K9 Balin gave a positive indication of the odor of illegal drugs.

A probable cause search was conducted and 8.5 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, a digital scale, multiple small Ziploc baggies, and cash were located in the vehicle. An additional two grams of methamphetamine were located on the person of Brittany Rook, 23, of Little Rock, a passenger in the vehicle.

Speelman was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, a class B felony; Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a class D felony; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Rook was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance-1st Offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, both simple misdemeanors.

• Taken into custody on arrest warrants

Caleb Brewer, 35, of Royal, was taken into custody by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office on July 3 at 11:10 p.m. The report stated he was arrested on an active Buena Vista County warrant for two mittimus for the original charge of Domestic Abuse Assault-1st Offense and Driving While Barred. Brewer was turned over to Buena Vista County.

• Pleads guilty to reduced charge

Bradley Kots, of Sutherland, was sentenced in O’Brien County District Court in connection with several felony and misdemeanor charges.

Court records state that Kots had been charged with seven felony counts and four misdemeanors. Through a plea agreement, Kots pled guilty to a charge of Theft-3rd degree, an aggravated misdemeanor, which was reduced from Theft-2nd degree, a class D felony. The other felony and misdemeanor charges were dismissed.

Judge Charles Borth sentenced Kots to 364 days in jail, with 154 of those suspended, and will receive credit for time served. Kots will also serve two years’ probation.

Kots was arrested in December 2020 following a high-speed chase through Osceola and O’Brien counties. He was charged with two felonies along with a misdemeanor charge of possession of methamphetamine. Kots was also accused of stealing several vehicles in several area counties.
