• July 25, 1946

Tentative plans for Hartley’s park just south of the athletic field were submitted to the park board. They called for two hard surface tennis courts, two badminton courts, horseshoe court, wading pool, sand pile, slide and swings, along with a picnic area.

With the exception of plate glass and some interior decorating, the modern office of the Huntting Elevator Co. was complete. The up-to-date tile building added much to the appearance of Hartley’s business district.

Hartley’s main street was stretching northward as work went forward on the new home of Swanson’s Grocery on the corner of Maple Drive and Central Avenue.

The first accident at the Hartley airport occurred when a new Cessna piloted by Lon McDowell, Jr. nosed over upon landing. No one was injured.

• July 22, 1971

Candidate Robert Luinstra, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Luinstra, of May City, entered the holy ministry of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod by the Rite of Ordination at St. John’s Lutheran Church. A 1963 graduate of Hartley High School, the candidate had accepted a call to be co-pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church and campus minister at North Dakota State University.


Jim Fanning Day in Hartley was a success. A new archway designating the ball diamond as “Jim Fanning Field” was unveiled and two baseball games were held. The entire baseball career of Fanning, who was general manager of the Montreal Expos, was relived at an impressive program held at Meadowbrook Country Club.

• July 25, 1996

Kevin Soden and Jim Miller, volunteers with the Hartley Fire Department, completed and passed the certification for the Fire Fighter I program. The firemen attended the class one night per week for three hours, for a total of 17 weeks.


Kelsie Mills, daughter of Greg and Kristy Mills, and Tanner Young, son of Robert and Malissa Young, were named Little Miss Hartley and Mr. Muscle during Hartley’s Crazy Days. They would represent Hartley at area events.
