Steven Starr Slater, the son of Harry and Martha (Engelkes) Slater, was born on Dec. 27, 1956, in Clifton Heights, Pa. He was raised in Trona, Calif. where he attended school and graduated from Trona High School in 1974. After graduation he entered into the military on June 28, 1974, serving in the U.S. Army.
