Daycare fundraiser is next weekend

The Hartley Community Daycare Center will hold its annual fundraising event on Saturday, June 26 at the Hartley Community Center. Featured entertainment includes dueling pianos and a silent auction will also be held.

Tickets are available by calling the daycare at (712) 928-3292 or visiting the facility’s Facebook page. All proceeds from the event will benefit the daycare.

Solsma’s Fireworks display is Friday

Solsma’s Fireworks, located on Highway 18 between Sanborn and Hartley, will hold its annual fireworks demo on Friday, June 18 at 9 p.m. Food trucks will be available beginning at 5 p.m.

The demo is free to all guests.

Summer library program in Hartley

Hartley Public Library’s summer library program provides opportunities and incentives to keep kids reading, discovering, playing and creating all summer long. This year’s theme is “Reading Colors Your World.”

To join the summer reading program, stop by the library to register and pick up a log to record your reading time. Compete for prizes and enjoy the joy of reading.

Programs during the summer are free and no registration is required. Come to one event or all as your schedule allows. Add the following programs to your summer schedule:

June 23, 9-11:30 a.m. - ISU Hands-on Art Camp (preregister at the Extension website).

June 23, 2 p.m. - Movie to be announced. Free popcorn!

Kids ages 1-4 can come with their caregivers to enjoy stories, songs and crafts geared to them during Toddle Time on June 30 at 10:45 a.m. Caretakers are expected to stay with the children and be responsible for them during this time. Older kids can enjoy stories, games, and crafts beginning at 10:30 on these days.

Teens can enjoy teen game day at 3:30 p.m. on July 7 and August 4. Teen craft days will be held on July 7 and July 21 at 3:30 p.m.

Adult coloring will be open at the library every Tuesday in June at 2 p.m.

D&L Ceramics now open in Everly

D&L Ceramics in Everly is open again with regular hours. Classes are available, and people of all skill levels are welcome to participate.

Hartley blood drive is June 23

The next Hartley community blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, June 23, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. at the Hartley Community Center. New donors are especially needed.

Ernst traveling office hours scheduled in June

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) announced that her office will be holding traveling office hours in all 99 counties across Iowa at different times during the month of June to provide assistance with casework for constituents.

Representatives from Senator Ernst’s office will be available to assist Iowans with problems or questions about issues involving Social Security, veterans’ benefits, military affairs, passports, immigration issues and other federal programs.

Those who are seeking assistance with federal agencies but who are unable to attend the traveling office hours can contact one of the Senator’s offices directly or submit a casework request online at http://www.Ernst.Senate.Gov.

Upcoming dates and locations in this area for traveling office hours include:

• Clay County: Tuesday, June 22, 1-2 p.m., Grand Avenue Community Outreach, 605 Grand Avenue in Spencer.

• O’Brien County: Tuesday, June 22, 3-4 p.m., Crossroads Pavilion Boardroom, 301 34th Avenue in Sheldon.

Annual Research Farm field

The annual Northwest Iowa Research Farm Field Day will be held Wednesday, July 7, from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the farm located at 6320 500th Street, Sutherland.

The field day will focus on pest and weed management and nitrate reduction practices.

“We look forward to holding our field day live and in-person this year,” said Joel DeJong, field agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach, in a news release.

The program will begin with a conversation with ISU Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dr. Daniel Robison.

Other topics include updates on corn rootworm and soybean gall midge management, led by Erin Hodgson, Extension Entomologist; integrated weed management updates for 2021, led by Prashant Jha, Extension Weed Specialist; and edge-of-field practices for nitrate reduction, led by Matt Helmers, ISU Ag and Biosystems Engineering Professor.

Attendance at the field day is free and open to the public. Registration is not needed. A complimentary noon lunch will also be available.

Moneta all-school reunion is July 24

Get your reservations in for the Moneta all-school reunion to be held Saturday, July 24, at the Hartley Community Center.

Waste tire disposal offered by FB

Waste tires are banned from disposal in Iowa sanitary landfills and open burning of waste tires is prohibited by Iowa law. To help its members dispose of old tires, the O’Brien County Farm Bureau applied for and has received a Farm Bureau Share Grant.

The board of directors has earmarked this grant for a tire recycling project. O’Brien County Farm Bureau members may bring up to eight passenger or light truck tires to the show ring at the O’Brien County fairgrounds in Primghar on Saturday, June 26, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., or on Monday, June 28, from 5-7 p.m. Tires must be removed from rims. Up to eight tires per household will be accepted.

This service is offered at no charge to O’Brien County Farm Bureau members. If you are not a member, contact Phyllis Postma at the Farm Bureau office at (712) 957-2535 before June 24 to become a member. The tires will be shipped to a tire recycling center.

Between the Covers meets June 29

Between the Covers Book Club will discuss “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins when they meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, in the front room of Hartley Public Library.

Lydia Quixano Perez lives a comfortable middle-class existence in Acapulco, Mexico, with her journalist husband, Sebastian, and her 8-year-old son, Luca. Lydia runs a bookstore and one day befriends a charming customer, Javier, who appears to have similar interest in books. However, when Javier is revealed to be the kingpin of a drug cartel in a tell-all profile by her husband, Lydia and Luca are forced to flee and join the countless people trying to reach El Norte. Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they trying to reach?

Regular hours at Royal library

The Royal Public Library is now operating normally. Hours remain the same: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Food pantry at HLC

Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Everyone is allowed to come in and pick out their food, but masks are required.

Al Anon meetings

Al Anon meetings are held at the following locations each week:

Wednesday, 8 p.m., 511 Southmoor, Spencer; Thursday, 8 p.m., Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal; Sunday, 7 p.m., Sanford Medical Center, 118 N 7th Ave., Sheldon.
