Memorial Day services will return to form next Monday at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley.

Last year's ceremony was held at the Hartley Community Center, where patrons were restricted to listening to the program on their car radios due to social distancing protocol. Things are back to normal this year, as the service will once again be held at the cemetery.

Duane Jalas, of Sutherland, will deliver the keynote address. The retired pastor served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was injured during the Tet Offensive in 1968 and was forced to spend 14 months recovering in Brooke Army Hospital, eventually receiving a medical retirement in 1969.

Jalas served churches in Wisconsin, Illinois and Texas before his retirement in 2011. He and his wife moved back to Sutherland that year, and he currently serves as a part-time visiting pastor at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hartley.

Services at Pleasant View Cemetery will start at 9:30 a.m., on Monday, May 31. Ten new flags will be dedicated to the Avenue of Flags: Dale Wacker, Marvin Olhausen, Rodger Burley, Dale Nagel, David Schroeder, Mike Higgins, Dennis Leth, Keith Steinbeck, Dennis Hickmon, Rodney Harms and Robert Gable.
