The War Department notified Mrs. Ruth Ann Wehler that her husband’s application to join him at his overseas station had been approved and she should make immediate application for a passport. 1st Lt. Wehler was stationed at Salzburg, Austria. Mrs. Wehler was making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hirt.

The annual poppy sale hit an all-time high. The proceeds amounted to $250, which all went to the veterans of wars. The sale was carried on under the direction of Mrs. F.A. Albright.

Fire Chief Harry Stoterau and Henry Lorenzen made an inspection of Hartley business houses in order that unnecessary fire hazards might be detected and eliminated. The greatest hazards were faulty wiring; however, boxes and old rags also offered fire danger.

• May 27, 1971

Eilers Sports, of Hartley, was among the exhibitors at the Outdoor Living Show, held at the amusement park in Arnolds Park. The show heralded the opening of the lake season.

Marti Barnard, John Loder and Shelley O’Brien were initiated into the Hartley High School chapter of Quill and Scroll, the international honorary society for high school journalists. Membership was selective, as initiates had to have made a noteworthy contribution to some phase of high school publication work.

Seventeen people interested in Hartley High School athletics met to organize a booster club. Except for the name of the organization, they adopted a constitution. Three name options were offered to the members to choose from, and a slate of candidates for the board of directors was to be voted upon.

• May 30, 1996

After 20 years under the sponsorship of the Low Rent Housing Administration of Hartley, the 10 units in east Hartley were taken over by the Northwest Iowa Regional Housing Authority. The building was owned by an Omaha, Neb. firm. Director for the 20 years was Lyla Balliet. Assistant Director Helen Miller was charged with completing all the financial statements and submitting the audit closeout.

Members of the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys’ track and field team had a “fantastic weekend” at the state meet in Des Moines. Mark Scharnberg ran “a perfect race” to win the Class 1A 3200 meter run. He also set a new school record. Also setting a school record was the 4x800 relay squad of Scharnberg, Todd Schulz, Timo Schweer and Korey Ebel, which finished third at state. One other individual and two relay teams also competed at state.
