A salamander drew attention when Clay County Conservation paid a visit to CC/E last week.

Last week closed the book on the 2020-2021 school year at Clay Central/Everly. The year was marked with numerous hurdles, dominated primarily by the COVID-19 pandemic rules and regulations. The district faced each with thoughtfulness and awareness, knowing that the supreme goal was safety and trying to keep kids in classrooms throughout the entire year.

The district achieved that goal and did so with few repercussions. The students and staff alike stayed as safe and healthy as one could during a pandemic, and the halls were filled with masked children ready and eager to learn.

CC/E sprang into the summer break with a week full of fun last week. On Thursday the children had the treat of inviting parents and guardians to join them for a "Breakfast Buddies" meal of delicious donuts in the cafeteria. This same day was the first day following the governor's mask-free proclamation, allowing everyone to enjoy the event without face coverings.

Thursday was also supposed to feature a field trip to Scharnberg Park, but rain canceled plans. Staff was prepared for this and had Clay County Naturalist Bri Blom and Conservationist Brittney onsite to bring some life to the rained-out day. Blom had students match adult creatures to their offspring and showcased many Iowa creatures like tadpoles, bullheads, bugs, reptiles and amphibians.

Students enjoyed checking out the box turtle.

Students also created Dirt Monsters with Jen from Clay County Farm Bureau. Students planted grass seeds in bits of pantyhose to serve as the monster's hair while it grows, using elastics, pipe cleaners and googly eyes to decorate each creation.

The day wrapped up with a visit from former CC/E students that just graduated from other districts. The former Mavericks walked the halls for the annual graduation walk while elementary students looked on in awe.

The last day of class on Friday featured treats and an awards ceremony. The day took a solemn turn as students exited the buildings, with sixth graders knowing it would be their final year as a Maverick. Others shed tears over missing their friends during the summer and saying goodbye to teachers moving on from CC/E.
