Receives $1,000 MRES scholarship

Ethan Spronk, of Hartley, is a recipient of a $1,000 Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) scholarship. Spronk is a 2021 graduate of Western Christian High School. He plans to attend the Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon.

Graduating high school seniors who are pursuing a career in a Powerline/Lineworker Program and attend one of the pre-selected regional technical colleges are eligible for the one-time $1,000 scholarship.

MRES retained an independent scholarship management company to select the successful applicants. Academic achievement accounted for 50 percent of the selection criteria. The balance of the criteria consisted of a combination of factors including work experiences, activities, awards and honors, and career goals and plans. Applicants also were required to provide a brief narrative about their municipal utility.

MRES, headquartered in Sioux Falls, S.D., supplies wholesale electricity and energy services to 61 member communities in the states of Iowa (including Hartley), Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

They are located along the east edge of North Eastern Street directly behind Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn.
