Kinsey Schirmer watches the flight of the ball after hitting her tee shot in the meet last Thursday.

After working all season to earn their first win, the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn girls' golf team had to wait a little longer to determine the outcome of their meet with MMCRU on April 30.

Both teams finished the dual at Marcus with identical scores of 229. To determine the tiebreaker, the fifth-lowest score of each team was used. The advantage went to the Hawks, which gave them their first win in seven War Eagle Conference meets.

"I'm proud of the ladies for getting the win," said Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese.

Darby Mastbergen and Kinsey Schirmer were Nos. 2 and 4 among the medalists, finishing with rounds of 55 and 57. Elle Mastbergen finished with a 58, Megan Ten Kley had a 59, Elise Haack shot a 63 and Emily Sindt finished with a 68.

"We are proving that on any given night, any one of them can play well. Now we just need to put it together so we all play with that consistency night after night," Kroese said.

The Royals' Avery Schlenger shot a 53 to top the leader board.

H-M-S's JV players, Alexis Grover and Emma Schmillen, recorded scores of 65 and 68, respectively.

One player may not have decided the result, but she certainly had an impact.

Remsen St. Mary's Tori Galles shot a 40 to lead all players in a conference golf meet last Thursday at Sanborn. Her score was 14 strokes better than the best turned in by an H-M-S golfer, which proved to be a big part of St. Mary's 199-224 win.

Megan Ten Kley, hitting an approach shot to a hole at the Sanborn course, finished with the best round for H-M-S.

Megan Ten Kley shot a 54 to lead H-M-S. According to Hawk coach Cheryl Kroese, Ten Kley was tied for fourth place, but was beat out on the handicap hole.

Other H-M-S scores were Elle Mastbergen 55, Darby Mastbergen 57, Elise Haack 58, Kinsey Schirmer 60 and Emily Sindt 64.

JV scores for H-M-S were Alexis Grover 59 and Emma Schmillen 62.

The War Eagle Conference girls' golf tournament will be played at the Ridge Golf Course in Sioux Center on May 10. Scores from that meet will also determine the winner of a dual meet with Akron-Westfield which could not be played earlier in the season.
