J&J vaccine given go-ahead, again

6 cases of rare blood clot disorder caused pause this month

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is the only one-dose shot available in the United States. The other two vaccines, made by Pfizer and Moderna, require two doses.

The Centers for Disease Control last Friday resumed rollout of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine following an 11-day pause.

Administration of the vaccine was halted April 12 so the CDC could review six reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot that occurred in individuals after they received the Johnson & Johnson shot. In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets.
