Jesse Garcia competes in the shot put during the South O'Brien meet on March 29. He placed fifth in the varsity event.

A pair of early-season outdoor meets gave the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn boys' track and field team its first taste of competition for the 2021 season.

Hawk coach Kyle Borchers said the first meet, hosted by West Sioux on March 25, was something like a scrimmage that gave teams a chance to work out in a competitive setting. The meet on March 29 at South O'Brien was more like a regular meet, but Borchers again used it as a means of gauging how far along the Hawks have progressed.

At South O'Brien, Connor Dodd won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Kooper Ebel won the 400. Dawson Schiphoff was runner-up in the 200.

Brenton Thomas placed third in the 800. George Vargas placed fifth in the 3200 meter run and Jesse Garcia was fifth in the shot put.

In the relays, H-M-S came in fourth in the 4x200 and fifth in the 4x400.

Dodd finished second in the 100 and 200 at West Sioux, as did Ebel in the 400 and Garcia in the shot put. The Hawks also finished second in the 800 medley relay.

Other individual results included fifth-place finishes by Noah Adams in the 100, Ebel in the 200 and Gabe Bronstad in the shot put; and sixth place finishes by Schiphoff in the 100 and Adams in the 200.

Other relay finishes were: 4x100, third; 4x200 and 1600 medley relay, fourth; and 4x400, fifth.

H-M-S will compete in the Tomahawk Relays at Cherokee on April 8 and the Unity Christian Relays on April 12.
