Chamber hosting Cabin Fever Golf this Friday
The Hartley Chamber of Commerce is bringing back Cabin Fever Golf. The event will be held on Friday, April 9 from 4:30-7 p.m., at various local businesses.
The cost to participate is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Sign up by calling (712) 928-4278.
Ladies night out in Sanborn is tonight
The Sanborn Chamber of Commerce and Sanborn Hardware are hosting a Ladies Night Out on Thursday, April 8 from 5-8 p.m.
The event will be held at Yesterday’s Memories Museum with a food truck and vendors. A succulent planting is also planned.

Hungry for pancakes?
If you’re hankering for some pancakes this month, you’re in luck.
Three separate pancake breakfasts are planned in May City, Hartley and Everly over the next two weeks. See the ads on Page 3 for complete details.
After school program April 12 at Hartley library
Hartley Public Library will be holding an after school program for children in elementary school (TK-fourth grade) from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 12, at the library.
Pre-register by Sunday, April 11. Space is limited so stop by the library during regular hours or email sarah.pearce@hartley.lib.ia.us to register.
Children are required to wear a mask. They will be bussed from the school to the library. Please alert the library to any allergies your child has, as well as who will be picking your child up after school.
Open house at Everly Public Library tomorrow
In conjunction with National Library Week, the Everly Public Library will be holding an open house on Friday, April 9.
The public is invited to stop by between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to see the changes that have been made at the library.
Upcoming programs at Hartley library
The Hartley Writers Group will meet at the library at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 8. All writers are welcome to attend.
The Virtual Nature Conservation Book Club will be discussing “The Overstory” by Richard Powers over Zoom, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13. To join and receive an invitation, contact aparker@obriencounty.iowa.gov.

Expanded hours at Royal library
The Royal Public Library has expanded its hours. New hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 3-5 p.m .; and Tuesday and Saturday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
Due to COVID-19, the library will remain locked. Please call (712) 933-5500 or knock at the door during open hours. Social distancing practices remain and masks are required.
Food pantry hours at Hope Lutheran
Current hours for the food pantry at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly are Mondays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and Wednesdays, 1-5 p.m. Please knock on the church door and food will be brought out to you.
Babysitting for Beginners workshop at Primghar
A Babysitting for Beginners workshop will be held on Saturday, May 1, from 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., at the O’Brien County Extension office in Primghar.
The program is open to youth in fourth grade or older and will cover first aid skills and emergency preparedness; healthy and easy snack options; diaper changing; and age-appropriate activities for kids.
“Participants will leave with knowledge of basic First Aid and what to do in an emergency,” said Sarah Fiddelke, O’Brien County Youth Coordinator, who is hosting the program. “They will also design their own babysitting bag full of age-appropriate games and activities, make some healthy snacks and, everyone’s favorite, practice changing diapers.”
There is no cost to attend; however, preregistration is required and registration is limited to the first 20 registrants. To register or ask questions, contact Fiddelke at (712) 957-5045 or email sfiddelk@iastate.edu.
Blood drive to be held April 21
LifeServe Blood Center will be conducting a blood drive in Hartley on Wednesday, April 21, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. at the Hartley Community Center, 820 2nd Street NE. New donors are especially needed.
All donors are asked to bring a valid form of identification and masks will be required. If you do not have a mask, one will be provided.

Learn about ‘Bizarre History of Iowa’ at HPL
Chad Lewis, a researcher, author and lecturer, will be in the back room of Hartley Public Library at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, to present “Bizarre History of Iowa.” If you are unable to attend you can join the presentation on Zoom by emailing director.lib@hartley.lib.ia.us for an email invitation.
Lewis, who is from Eau Claire, Wis., has traveled the globe in search of unique and bizarre stories and history for over 20 years. Some of his destinations have included studying UFOs in Kecksburg, Pa .; an Aztec crash site in New Mexico; tracking Bigfoot in Canada and the United States; visiting the Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa; and researching haunted castles and tunnels in London.
He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Psychology.

Celebrate ISU Extension and Outreach Week, April 12-17
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Week is April 12-17. Iowa’s 100 county Extension offices will host activities throughout the week to thank Iowans for their support of extension efforts throughout the state.
The Clay County office will be celebrating throughout the entire week with giveaways, trivia, coloring contests and more. Follow along on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ISUEOClay) or stop into the office at 110 West 4th Street, Suite 100, in Spencer.
“This week-long celebration is one way we say thank you to the many volunteers, community leaders, organizations, agencies and other partners who support our work in Clay County,” said Extension regional director Beth Frankenstein in a news release.
“The challenges of the past year changed how ISU Extension and Outreach serves Iowans, but not why. We want a strong Iowa. We are here for Iowans now and always,” said Cheryl Heronemus, regional Extension director for Lyon, Osceola, Sioux and O’Brien counties.
ISU Extension and Outreach is part of the federal Cooperative Extension Service, a network of more than 100 land-grant institutions, including Iowa State University, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture serving communities and counties across the United States. Every county in Iowa has an elected council that decides how to support Extension educational programs at the county level.
