Richard 'Dick' A. Terpstra, 87, Spencer

Funeral services for Richard “Dick” Allen Terpstra were held Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer. Pastor Casey VanderBent officiated. Military services were conducted by American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 and V.F.W. Clay County Post #3159, of Spencer. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Warner Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Richard “Dick” Allen Terpstra, the son of Rients and Lorian (Peterson) Terpstra, was born May 12, 1933, in Hartley. His childhood years were spent in the Hartley area where he attended Lincoln #8 country school and graduated from Hartley High School in 1951.

Dick enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in 1953 and served until his honorable discharge in 1955. He married Delma Klett on June 29, 1958, in Milford. The first 10 years of marriage he farmed west of Hartley. He then worked at Walnut Grove Feed Co. for two years, managed and eventually owned Lakes Concrete for more than 20 years, and then ran a concrete block company in Waterloo for 10 years before retiring in 1999.

Dick enjoyed working in the block business and served as president of Iowa Concrete & Masonry Association. He enjoyed golfing and especially spending time with friends and family. Dick always looked forward to wintering in Texas. He was a member of First Congregational Church in Spencer.

Dick passed away at Spencer Hospital on Friday, March 19, 2021, at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delma; one sister, Barbara Baysinger; and several beloved outlaws (in-laws).

Left to cherish his memory are his four children: Rick (Kelli), of Allen, Texas; Rob (Nancy), of Anna, Texas; Ryan, of Spencer; and Renae of Garland, Texas; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Terpstra, of Kansas; other relatives and many friends.
