Funeral services for Karen L. Olin were held Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. Pastor John Jensen officiated. Casket bearers were Craig Manning, Christopher Woodall, Tommy Lambert, Donny Nelson, Greg Toft and Troy Leininger. Warner Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Karen Lynn Olin, daughter of William Scarborough and Clara Jean (Moore) Ostenstad, was born Sept. 23, 1951 in Des Moines. Her childhood years were spent in the Spencer area where she attended school and graduated from Spencer High School in 1970.

Karen married Thomas Olin on Aug. 10, 1979 in Spencer. They then moved to Royal where she raised her kids in the Royal community. She worked for Iowa Great Lakes Broadcasting, now KICD, for 20 plus years. She also worked as a receptionist and homemaker. Karen enjoyed social events, bowling, attending her children’s activities and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. She was known for finding humor in all situations.


Karen passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Friday, March 19, 2021, at the age of 69. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Thomas, of Royal; three children: Jacob (Jessica) Olin, of Sioux Center; Molly (Kirk) Stearns, of Emmetsburg; and Joshua Olin, of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Aubrey Olin and Anika, Hayden and Thomas Stearns; one brother, Bill (Mary) Scarborough, of Omaha, Neb.; one cousin, Deb (Reid) Leonard, of Boston, Mass.; one sister-in-law, Julie (Ted) Smith, of Storm Lake; two nieces; three nephews; other relatives and many friends.
